The Story

Out Searching was the first record where I stopped trying to decide what my music was supposed to sound like and started letting the songs answer that question.

I began writing much of the album after moving to Vermont in 2016. Music had taken a quieter role in my life for a while as I settled into a new place, started a full-time job, and gradually found my way into the local music community. Eventually, new relationships, heartbreak, anxiety, and the experience of rebuilding my life gave me plenty to write about again.

In 2019, I connected with producer Christopher Hawthorn at Studio 150 in Burlington. After deliberately aiming for a particular pop sound on Starting Over, I approached this record differently. Chris and I didn't begin with a predetermined destination. We worked song by song, figuring out what each one wanted to be. That freedom, and the trust we developed working together, helped me make a record that finally felt completely natural to me.

Most of the recording was finished by early 2020. Then COVID stopped everything. Sessions were delayed, gigs disappeared, and after eventually returning to the studio, I decided not to rush the release. I had waited years to make a record that felt this right, and I wanted to give it the attention I thought it deserved.

As I prepared to release it, I realized the songs already told a story. Arranged in the order I had written them, they traced several years of my life: self-examination, heartbreak, anxiety, starting over, and eventually finding hope and connection again. The title came from a lyric in “Searching for Water,” but it also described what I heard running through the whole record.

“Kings of the Broken” and “Searching for Water” arrived as the first singles in 2021, followed by “Honest Liar” and “My Turn” in 2022. Out Searching was released that May.

For the first time, I wasn't listening to one of my records and wondering what I might have done differently to make it sound more like me.

I could just hear myself.
