After finishing Out Searching, I wanted another reason to keep experimenting in the studio. Covers had always been a huge part of my life as a performer, but very little of that side of my music existed in my recorded catalog.

I reached back out to Christopher Hawthorn with a simple idea: take songs I loved and see how much we could do with a deliberately limited palette of acoustic guitars, vocals, piano, and light percussion. We jokingly called it the “Easy Sweezey Beautiful Cover Project.”

The limitations became part of the fun. Instead of trying to recreate the original recordings, we could pull songs apart and build new arrangements around them. It also gave me room to experiment more with vocal arrangements and harmonies, drawing on some of what I'd learned during my years singing and arranging a cappella.

I chose 14 songs, mostly from artists who had influenced me as a singer, songwriter, or musician. We recorded them as an ongoing studio project and released them individually between 2023 and 2025.

In hindsight, the project also became another step toward Maybe Magic. The freedom to experiment with arrangements and take a larger role in shaping the recordings helped prepare me to step further into production on my next album.
