Fifteen songs recorded live with just voice and acoustic guitar, spanning old favorites, unreleased songs and new material. Released throughout 2020 in three volumes before becoming a full album in November. A snapshot of the songs in their simplest form.

The Story

Meadowlark Sessions started with a prize I wasn't quite sure what to do with.

In 2019, I won the Advance Music Singer/Songwriter Contest, which included two free days of recording at Meadowlark Studios in Williston, Vermont. At the time, I was already deep into making the full-band album that would eventually become Out Searching, so I decided to use the studio time for something completely different.

For years, most people who heard me play saw me with nothing but an acoustic guitar. My family had always encouraged me to record my songs that way, but I loved making bigger records and never felt much urgency to do it. Free studio time gave me an excuse.

What began as a small acoustic project eventually grew to 15 songs, pulling from every part of my catalog: new material, unreleased songs that had never found a home, and stripped-down versions of songs from my first three albums. I recorded all 15 live—just voice and acoustic guitar—in the first of my two studio days with engineer Dan Kruglak.

Then the world changed.

I had entered 2020 with two recording projects nearing completion and was seriously considering another run at making music my full-time job. COVID put those plans, my gigs, and the unfinished Out Searching sessions on hold. Suddenly, Meadowlark Sessions was the project I actually had ready to share.

I released it throughout 2020 as three five-song volumes before collecting all 15 tracks as a full album that November.

I didn't set out to make a retrospective record. Looking back, though, that's partly what it became. Songs written as a teenager sit alongside songs I was still working on in 2020. Older recordings like “Bartender,” “Breathe,” and “Truly Free” got reduced back to the way I had performed them hundreds of times.

More than anything, Meadowlark Sessions captures a version of me that my studio albums hadn't: one guitar, one voice, and the songs carrying the rest.
