The Story

After making No Hollywood Star, I was eager to get back into the studio. I returned to Brian Maes and many of the same musicians, and in a lot of ways, Fall became the next chapter of what we had started with the first record.

This time, though, I came in with more ideas of my own. I played more guitar, became more involved in production decisions, and started asserting myself more when it came to how I wanted the songs to sound. I was still learning how to make a record, but I was beginning to take more ownership of the process.

I was also writing constantly and eager to record what I had. Looking back, I hadn't yet developed the sense of curation I would gain later—the ability to recognize that writing a song didn't necessarily mean it belonged on the next album. But learning that was part of the process too.

The songs continued exploring much of the emotional territory I knew best at the time: love, uncertainty, reassurance and figuring out who I was becoming. “You Can't Bring Us Down,” written in the days following the Boston Marathon bombing, also pushed me outside of my own experience and toward writing about something my larger community was going through.

The title Fall came partly from the autumn imagery running through the record and partly because it simply felt right for an album I knew I wanted to release that season. “If You Fall” arrived as the first single in February 2013, followed by “Truly Free” that spring, before the full album was released in November during my senior year at Northeastern.

For a long time, Fall was probably the album in my catalog I thought about the least. Listening back now, though, I hear an important step between making my first record and beginning to understand what kind of artist I wanted to become.

I was still learning—and starting to trust my own instincts enough to have a say in where I went next.
